Welcome back to the 2nd day of Christmas-DIY Christmas Ornaments that is! I’m back with my second project- DIY Sprinkle Ornaments! I’m so excited by all the awesome ornaments my fellow bloggers are sharing and I hope you’re enjoying it so far too!
To start today’s ornament you’ll need to gather your supplies:
- clear glass ball ornament
- sprinkles of your choosing
I tried this with a number of different methods to get the sprinkles to stick to the inside of the ornament and this ONLY worked with varnish and by following these directions exactly-otherwise the color of the sprinkles bleeds and it looks not-so-nice! You’ve been warned!
Squirt some varnish into the ornament and swirl it around to coat.
When the ornament is completely covered on the inside set it upside down on some newspaper or scrap paper to let the excess varnish run out-move the ornament every few minutes to make sure that all the excess is allowed to drip out. This is important, if you have too much varnish it will bleed! Let the ornament continue to drain and dry for about 10-15 minutes-we want it tacky, not too sticky on the inside.
If you have a funnel use it to add your sprinkles-I didn’t have one handy so I just made a little tube from newspaper instead. Add sprinkles and rotate the ornament so that all the surface is coated.
Dump out any excess sprinkles if you desire and allow the ornament to dry. For the best results I recommend changing the ornament’s position every 5 minutes or so as it’s drying just in case the varnish starts to try to pool at the bottom again, which can result in that bleeding of the dye in the sprinkles.
This is super cute with lots of different types of sprinkles as you can see in the top picture.
(By the way glass ornaments are SO hard to photograph-there’s always a glare!)
Be sure to stop by all the other blogs participating to get a ton more inspiration-see you tomorrow with another DIY ornament idea!
