I grew up between southeastern Virginia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina and if there is one thing I love, it’s Southern comfort food. I love things just smothered in yummy gravy, like this homemade sausage gravy perfect for making biscuits and gravy.

What is Sausage Gravy?

Sausage Gravy is a classic Southern recipe, usually served with Biscuits and Gravy. It’s a simple 3-ingredient recipe that takes just 15 minutes to make.

I usually make this gravy when we have our breakfast for dinner nights. It’s perfect over homemade drop biscuits with eggs on the side. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Ingredients

You only need sausage, flour, and milk for this easy recipe (plus a little pepper if you like.)

Step by step with video

This recipe is SO easy!

  1. Brown the pork sausage in a large skillet over medium high heat, mashing into small pieces as you cook.
  2. Add flour to the meat and stir to coat.
  3. Add milk stirring continuously until it thickens. Boom! Done!

Can I Make This Ahead of Time?

It is possible to make this sausage gravy ahead of time if necessary, although for the best taste I recommend eating it right after preparation.

To make ahead of time, allow the sausage gravy to cool then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to three days. Reheat in the microwave or over medium-low heat on the stovetop, stirring often.

Serving suggestions

For biscuits and gravy, serve this Southern sausage gravy over my easy homemade drop biscuit recipe and scrambled eggs. This is also great served over homemade Texas toast! I’ve also served it over hash browns, corned beef hash, grits, and in breakfast bowls!

Tips for best results

  • Change the flavor of the sausage gravy by varying the sausage-you can use sage, spicy, etc.
  • You can make this sausage gravy with any kind of milk but the higher the fat content (whole milk), the creamier the end result.
  • This recipe is easy, but do not neglect the instructions to stir constantly! You don’t want to burn the gravy.
  • If making biscuits and gravy from scratch, I recommend starting with the homemade drop biscuits, then making the gravy as the biscuits are baking in the oven, you can have everything ready in under 30 minutes.

  1. The first time I have ever made sausage gravy. I also made biscuits from scratch. The isolation is starting to bother me. I needed to try cooking. The preparation was easy. The cooking went fast and according to my wife The result was awesome. 😋
Of course it could be because she didn’t have to cook.

    1. I am still making biscuits and gravy usually every other Sunday for brunch. I am now buying the prepaid flaky biscuits. My wife is still loving them. Thanks again for the recipe. MEL
