As soon as the weather gets warm each year I’m out on the grill every chance I can get. I absolutely love making dinner alfresco, whether it’s hot dogs and burgers, kabobs, or steaks. When we entertain I like to experiment with new burger combinations especially. Recently I combined my love for cheeseburgers with my love for Mexican cuisine and believe me when I say you’re going to fall in love with this Southwest Cheeseburger recipe and fun Burger Bar we created with the end product!
This recipe is perfect for serving up to a crowd by setting up a Burger Bar with all sorts of toppings to compliment the hint of spice in the Cheeseburger. By setting up a Burger Bar, you can prep all the toppings ahead of time and then only spend the grill time while you are entertaining. It’s a great way to accommodate a lot of different tastes too (like my low carb friends who enjoyed it without a bun!)
I was inspired to come up with this recipe after spotting Sargento Blends 4 Cheese Southwest Slices at Publix recently. They were actually in the process of rearranging the cheese cooler to make room for this sliced cheese that just hit the market so it caught my eye immediately. It contains Monterey Jack with Chipotle Cheddar, Colby, and Pepper Jack cheeses (my mouth is watering!) Since we all know cheese is my favorite ingredient in any recipe, I had to give it a try!

When making your own hamburgers, I fall firmly into the category of less is more. This recipe adds just enough to the meat, fajita seasoning and diced tomatoes and peppers, but still lets the beef flavor be the star. (Full printable recipe at the bottom of the post.)
TIP: When making hamburger patties with higher fat content meat such as full-fat ground beef, make the burgers larger than the bun as they will shrink down substantially when cooking.
Once your burgers are made you can get really creative with your toppings. Of course, I add the Sargento® Blends™ 4 Cheese Southwest Slices to the burgers right as they come off the grill so they can get nice and melty while I build my toppings up. Here are the toppings I put out when serving these Southwest Cheeseburgers:
- pico de gallo
- chopped cilantro
- sliced red onion
- black beans
- sliced bell peppers
- chopped jalapeño
It was really fun to see how everyone dressed up their cheeseburgers a little differently!

Combine your love of spicy flavor and classic hamburgers with this crowd-pleasing Southwest Cheeseburger recipe.
- 1.5 lbs ground beef
- 2 tablespoons fajita seasoning
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes & peppers (canned in tomato section of grocery store)
- Sargento Blends 4 Cheese Southwest Slices
Combine all ingredients and mix well with hands until blended. Shape into four patties. Grill over medium-high heat until cooked to your preference. Top with Sargento® Blends™ 4 Cheese Southwest Slices and burger toppings of your choice.
