I have a little confession: Memorial Day and Independence Day are my favorite holidays. There’s just this overwhelming feeling of unity and patriotism and family and reflection and freedom and celebrations all rolled into one glorious day. It gives me Goosebumps just thinking about it.
When I first dreamed about a red, white and blue tablescape (probably just a nerdy-DIYers thing right?) this year, I knew I wanted to break free from Stars and Stripes. Of course I have absolutely nothing against them, there was just this itch to get creative and give them a little break this season by going in a slightly non-traditional route. After scouring my local stores and digging in my stash of tableware I ended up with this simple yet stylish placesetting:
One of my favorite parts about the tablesetting is that although it’s simple, it is also versatile. When serving your mouthwatering grilled feast, there’s more than enough room to present the food on a red, white, or blue serving dish. Or better yet you could serve your festive food on a stained cutting board for some variation and texture. There are just enough pieces on the table to balance out the additional plates of food without going overboard.
This setting begins with a simple white quatrefoil tablecloth (from Bed Bath and Beyond) to provide a neutral base which allows each of the colorful pieces their own time to shine. The next layer is this daring navy blue and semi-transparent placemat from target which, I assure you, looks a lot less ‘plaid’ in person. In person, it has more of a ‘sketchy’ vibe to it. Next, red and white square plates are layered (from Bed, Bath, and Beyond) with a navy blue napkin (from the Food Network’s Kohl’s line) folded as a sash in between the plates. To top things off simply add a strawberry (these fake guys were scooped up from a second hand store for $0.75).
You could totally add your finest silverware wrapped in red, white, or navy napkins to finish things off nicely.
The Fiesta Red Pitcher and white scalloped bowl take center stage (they’re from Kohl’s and TJ Maxx respectively) offering both reachable convenience to the guests and a beautiful center piece all at the same time. Definitely a modern take on the traditional pitcher basin look. Can’t you just imagine some ice cold water with lemon, lime and strawberries floating on the top in that gorgeous pitcher?! Welcome summer baby!
The Large and Small Navy Blue Metal Orbs (from Target) take their place on each side of the pitcher providing enough transparency for conversation. The metal ‘Swiss-patterned’ candle holders (also from Target) add height diversity and ambiance with interesting shadows appearing when the sun hits them just right. Add a candle in each for even more shadowy oohs and ahhs when your party casually lingers well into dusk.
As you can see from the shot above, if you have enough red and white plates (or specifically buy three of each), you can alternate the base plate and dessert for added drama. This gives you the option alternate them every other or randomize it like I did.
I think the key to balance in this setting is alternating between bold pieces like the patterned placemats and candle holders with the plain finishes in the dishes and on the pitcher. All the while giving it texture and shape with the scalloped bowl, the almost corduroy texture in the napkins, and the slight pattern in quatrefoil tablecloth.
And since Memorial Day and Independence Day are separated by a mere 5.5 weeks, this tablesetting could be reused and even slightly restyled- by switching out a few staples. Which, in-turn, makes it more budget friendly. SCORE for double duty!!
Now all you have left to do is fill that table up with a scrumptious meal! I hope you find inspiration to mix and match pieces around your home. Or maybe I’ve just given you a slight urge to add a few new pieces into your festive tablescape! Either way, I hope you enjoy your holiday!!
Are you ready to kick off summer with the perfect day to feel unity and patriotism and family and reflection and freedom and celebration all-in-one? And what I’m dying to know is: what kind of delicious party menu are you preparing this year? Really, I need some ideas!!
