A long, long, long, long time ago (we’re talking 2012 here people) my dear ol’ Dad chance upon a midcentury chair and desk set in his local Goodwill store down in SC. Being the fantastic Dad he is he knew he had to pick it up for me and he spent, get this, $4 for the pair. FOUR DOLLARS! Unbelievable.
Anywho, I spiffed up the desk about a year and a half ago but the poor chair had been forgotten in the garage until a fwe weeks ago when my husband threatened to throw it away if I didn’t get it out of there!
So on one of our random 60 degree days two weeks ago I decided to get to work. The first thing I did was remove the icky vinyl covered seat pad. I didn’t want to sand the entire chair because, well, I was being lazy. I sanded it enough to remove any shine and stained over that reddish color with a Kona toned stain. It covered the red and made the wood a nice dark rich color…beautiful!
I found a cute navy and white chevron fabric at Hobby Lobby and bought one yard of it (with a coupon!) Covering the chair was easy, I cleaned the vinyl and then used a staple gun to cover the seat with the fabric. I started by positioning the chair seat on the fabric so I could make sure the pattern was straight.
Once the placement was right I stapled the top and bottom of the seat being sure the fabric was pulled tightly across to prevent wrinkles.
I was a little nervous about the curved front but by taking it slow and working with small sections, folding it and stapling every 2″ or so. I also alternated sides to keep it even and I was able to make it come out pretty nicely!
The finishing touch was to jazz up those gold tips on the legs. The metal itself was pretty corroded…I first tried Rub n’ Buff but it wasn’t covering the corrosion very well at all. What did work was Martha Stewart Liquid Gilding in Gold, it painted right over everything and looked great!
I reattached the seat bottom and the chair was finished, I don’t know why in the world it took me over a year and a half to do one afternoon’s worth of work to fix this beauty up!
This chair and that little stool are part of a master plan I have for the room my older two sons share…and that map desk is about to get another little update too (as soon as this cold weather goes away, anyone else ready for Spring??)
Be sure to pop back by tomorrow for a little Knock Off decor project and sign up for my newsletter at the top of the site if you want to be sure not to miss a thing!
