If you’re like me, it can sometimes be hard to stay motivated when saving money. My husband and I are currently really working very hard to pay down as much debt as we can (thanks so much student loans!) before he retires from the military in four years. We want to have the freedom for him to pursue something that brings him joy rather than worry about getting any job that he can just to make ends meet. For us that means cutting back on spending and using extra income to pay off debt.
For many of us the “saving for a rainy day” attitude towards financial goals can be a bit depressing…SunTrust is trying to inspired us to “LIVE for a sunny day” instead! This is exactly how my husband and I approach our long term and short term saving goals!
We realize that we won’t be able to go for four years without breaks in that saving discipline so we’ve also been saving a little bit each month to pay for twice a year vacations. Our family personally likes to take cruises because it’s an economical way for us to travel with our three young boys and allows us to enjoy both family time and alone time thanks to the on board kid’s camps. For us, knowing that that little “splurge” is coming up twice a year gives us the motivation to buckle down in the in between months.
I actually write in my planner how many days left I have until our next vacation so I can see it all the time! If I see a good sale for something I don’t need I just remind myself how awesome my “sunny day” is going to be–basking in the Caribbean sun with my husband and exploring new places with my family in just a few months or how nice it’s going to feel to be able to move to our “forever” home without the burden of excess debt once my husband’s military career is over! Those thoughts are more than enough to stop me from spending when I don’t need to!
