Okay y’all…you know I posted my home tour a while back but I have to admit there were a few rooms that didn’t get shown because they weren’t quite “pretty” enough.
Actually they are more like a whol-lotta-ugly!
The worst of the offenders was our “tech room.” This is tiny space off of our mudroom that has two built in desks. It’s where we have our desktop computer and where our two older sons do their homework in the afternoons.
And it was a mess. Here’s the desk where my sons do their homework:
It was full of clutter-markers, pencils, papers, books. I felt bad sending my poor second grader there every afternoon to supposedly concentrate and do his work. I can’t concentrate in the midst of chaos, why should I expect him to?
Enter the new line of home organization goodies from the Home Collection by Post-it Brand and Scotch Brand! This is a new product line available at The Container Store complete with Post-it Products and Scotch Products. Inspired by their beautiful colors I gave our homework nook a bright, cheerful, and most importantly-organized-makeover!
Doesn’t it look a gagillion times better?
The first thing I did was obviously paint the desktop. When the house was built it was originally painted the same color as the walls and I had put a coat of black milk paint on them last year to cover the pen marks the kids had immediately made all over them. The room is so tiny though and the dark desktop seemed so gloomy. I gave it a coat of paint using a $1 mistint sample I bought a while back (I knew it would get used eventually!)
I covered a piece of mdf with fabric to add some color and pattern to the area as well as disguise the outlet and cord for the lamp. That fabric was left over from my outdoor decor refresh. I love the bright green and the pretty trellis pattern!
On the side wall I used two Scotch Display Frames-one holds my kindergartener’s completed work (he loves to see it displayed!) and the other holds my 2nd grader’s weekly newsletter and homework schedule. No more searching through papers to see his assignment each day! The sides of the frames are open so I can switch the displayed papers out easily, and it’s mounted to the walls with Scotch Removable Mounting Squares so no damage to the walls if we want to take them down!
To the right of the Display Frames is a Post-it View and Go Pocket to hold the boys’ books for the week. They each have a book to work with and read each week and this pocket is the perfect place to store them so they don’t get lost throughout the week. Below the frames and Pocket is a Scotch Restickable Display Strip-this thing is neat-o! It’s precut in a cute pattern and sticks to the wall so you can stick notes and other pieces of paper up…we use it for reminders. The best part is it is removable and reusable!
On the back wall I used a Post-it Dry Erase Board to keep my older son’s weekly spelling words displayed as well as another View and Go Pocket to hold their notebook paper for assignments. Mason jars hold their pencils and scissors while a small bowl holds Post-it Notes, gluesticks, and erasers.
I am over the moon excited about what a huge change this made to the space, and can you believe I did the entire thing while my boys were at school one day-the three coats of blue paint were the longest part! My sons love doing their homework here now too, there’s been so much less whining and fussing and the work gets finished much faster-a win for everyone!
