Computers have really changed everything, haven’t they? Those of us old enough to remember life before everyone had a laptop and smartphone remember the big effort it took to learn something new. Going to the library, looking up a book in the card catalog, pulling out the trusty encyclopedia. It’s crazy how times change, isn’t it? These days if I want to learn something new I just pull out my laptop, type a few words and BOOM, there it is. Lately I’ve been binging on online classes using Skillshare and lucky you, they are offering my readers two FREE months so you can try it out too!! (Scroll to the bottom for an exclusive promo code for your 2 free months!)
Why I love online courses:
I am pretty sure I’m not the only one out there that feels like a hamster on a wheel: constantly running around trying to get a hundred things done, taking care of my family and home. It’s exhausting! Taking time to learn something new not only gives me that “me time” I need to recharge but it also inspires me to be more creative and helps me to learn new skills that in turn make other areas of my life easier.
Why I love Skillshare:
- They have over 17,000 classes to choose from across topics such as graphic design, photography, marketing, hand-lettering, productivity, social media strategy, and so much more – you’ll never run out of things to learn!
- It lets you save classes to take later and offers personalized suggestions for classes you might enjoy based off your previous interests
- The classes are taught by leaders in their fields
- Most classes come with an optional project to complete so you can put your new skills to the test, or you can just browse through other students’ projects for inspiration
- And, because we’re all super busy, you can choose classes that fit into your schedule, most that I’ve taken so far are under an hour long!
Classes I’ve taken so far my first month:
Y’all, this series of courses alone will save me hundreds of dollars down the road. I love offering free printables here on the blog but I create them using Photoshop which has some limitations. I have Adobe Illustrator but I just didn’t understand how to use it, so at times I’ve had to pay designers to make my ideas for printables into reality so I could share with you all. When I saw these courses by Brad Woodard, co-founder of the design firm Brave the Woods, I jumped at the chance to finally learn how to create designs in Illustrator. He broke down the lessons so wonderfully I didn’t feel overwhelmed with what can be a complicated program. By the end of the third class, I was able to design these gorgeous little printable tags that I shared with you last week!
Wow! This class was short and to the point and really upped my flower arranging game. I watched this class over my morning coffee on double speed one morning and was able to put together this bouquet later that day with inexpensive flowers from my grocery store! (The ability to speed up classes is such a cool feature that can help you get through a course twice as fast!)
I really loved this course, it was less than a half hour long and taught me to make a variety of different beautiful watercolor flowers as well as how to combine them to create projects like floral letters. I’m making some of these to give as Christmas gifts next month and I know they’ll go over fabulously!
I’m constantly trying to improve my photography and this course was great because it focused on food photography that anyone can do at home-no fancy equipment required. It gave me some great new styling tips as well as setup ideas that helped me tweak my home office so that the natural light would work better in my photos-I used one of their tips to help me diffuse the light in this recipe shot I shared last week!
Obviously I’m a woman obsessed with Skillshare since I joined which is why I was so excited that they are offering my readers 2 FREE months of Skillshare so you can try it out too! How cool is that?
