Let’s take a little walk down memory lane for a moment, shall we? As much as I’ve been looking forward to spring and summer after the long winter here in DC it’s been bittersweet because honestly I’ve been missing our old house in North Carolina pretty badly. I keep thinking “Are my tulips coming up? Has the forsythia I planted bloomed yet? How are my rose plants and hydrangeas doing?” I really miss that outdoor space we had!
Things aren’t all bad here at the new place, we’re adjusting to the lack of outdoor space as well as a family with three little boys can! The lack of outdoor space makes our deck here even more important-it was one of the first areas I decorated when we moved in last year. We eat on the deck at least once a day when the weather permits, the boys and I like to read and do our schoolwork out here, and it’s the perfect place for my morning coffee!
We have one more year here before the military will send us on to our next location (and hopefully our forever home!) so we’re trying to make the most of what we have right now. Most of those gorgeous trees behind our deck in the picture above from last year have unfortunately been torn down in favor of building more townhouses behind our house. So this year I’m really trying to decorate it to maximize privacy and create a sense of tranquility amidst the urban chaos. I started by changing the arrangement of the furniture so we weren’t staring directly out towards the construction.
We installed hanging planters on the deck railing and I’m planting geraniums, bacopa and sweet potato vine to help camouflage the deck from the construction behind it.
I’ve also planted many containers of veggies to feed my summer salsa addiction-we have tomatoes, peppers of all kinds, cilantro, and many other kitchen herbs.
Some pretty flowers brighten it up!
We moved the lights from our old porch to the railings here to give a little ambiance in the evenings, along with the lanterns we bought last year.
You know that I have to add succulents to everything as well….aren’t they beautiful?
This guy likes the deck too-he hangs out there pretty much 24/7. I’m happy to have a little pollinator helping me with my garden!
How is your deck doing so far this year? Does it need a little revamping?
