Just as I’ve been trying to move my family’s diet to more natural, whole foods I also have made it a priority to clean my home with natural products whenever possible. As someone with a background in science and chemistry I’ve always been hyper aware of what I’m using in my home, especially since I became a mother. My three young boys walk around barefoot in our home, eat on our counters, and touch just about every surface we have-it’s important to me that the cleaners I use aren’t leaving behind harmful residues or noxious fumes that they could be exposed to. Here are 5 easy ways to get your home sparkling without harsh chemicals!
1. Choose Natural Cleaners When Available
When you use store bought cleaners choose more natural options when available. I’ve made no secret that Bona floor cleaners are my favorite way to keep my hard surface floors clean in the past-that’s one area where I don’t DIY my cleaners (and be wary of those that advise you to do so-vinegar will dull your floor’s finish over time!) While all Bona cleaners are child and pet safe, they have a new Free & Simple version I now use-no dyes or scents, no residue to cling to little feet! (You can get a $3 coupon to try Bona Free & Simple here!)
2. Embrace the Vinegar!
Vinegar is my home’s go-to cleaner for almost everything other than my floors! I use it to clean my Keurig, clean my kitchen sink, and clean my dishwasher. I recently started using it as an alternative to rinse aids in the dishwasher as well-simply fill a small cup with vinegar and place it on the top shelf before running a wash cycle-it will help reduce those water spots and help dishes dry more quickly! (Don’t place vinegar in the receptacle intended for the rinse aid! The acidity could harm the rubber gaskets!) If you don’t like the smell of vinegar try making my orange basil vinegar cleaner to reduce that tell-tale smell!)
3. Stock Up On Baking Soda
Baking soda is another natural cleaner that can be used in many places throughout your home to clean without harsh chemicals. Use it to make a DIY carpet deodorizer, clean your oven, or shine your silver. Here are 20 other uses for baking soda you might not know as well!
