I love gifting sweet treats at Christmas time but this year I wanted to send something a little more shelf-stable to my out of state family.  I had recently made my favorite Brownie in a Mug Recipe for my husband and as I was mixing it up I realized it was the perfect thing to make in bulk and gift! I am sharing the single serving recipe with you today along with the conversion for making it in bulk for gifts, and I’m even throwing in some printable tags to boot! Merry Christmas to you!

Brownie in a Mug DIY Gift-1

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp dark cocoa
  • 4 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate chips (optional but oh-so-good!)

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a mug (batter will be very thick.) Microwave for 1 minute and enjoy!

You can also make this mix in bulk and gift it along with this cute printable tag I created! To make large batches mix

  • 3 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups dark cocoa
  • 5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

This mixture makes enough to fill 6 pint sized mason jars.

  1. Hi! These are good, but I think they need a little salt to balance out the sweetness. I added around 1/8 tsp salt for the single serve recipe.

About how much would be needed to make the bulk mix?

    Thanks!

  2. Wanted to make your Brownie in a Mug recipe with a kindergarten class. Did you ever post why the single mug recipe says 3 tablespoons of water, but the bulk recipe says 2 tablespoons water per serving?

    1. It’s just a difference in how much mix was used Dottie. The bulk recipe doesn’t make as large of a serving because I needed to measure out a round measurement (the 1/3 cup of mix) and the single serve is over 1/3 cup once you mix the individual ingredients.

      1. The kindergarten class enjoyed making, and are super excited to give, their pint jars of Brownie in a Mug Mix to their moms for Mother’s Day. Thank you for your quick response to my question.

  3. My roommate and I are looking for a mix like this that we can just add water to in our dorm room. Is there something I should try to mix in instead of the vegetable oil? We don’t usually keep that in our room.

    1. Hi Paige, I think it would be too dry without the vegetable oil. Perhaps you can keep a small bottle on hand? ~Melissa

  4. 1) How can we make the brownie less dry? Would 50 seconds in the microwave do the trick?
    2) idea: mix black after batter, pour it into a mug, press a Reese’s PB cup into the center, cover with batter and bake in the microwave as prescribed.

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I have a lot of jars at home and could use them to gift this to others:)
Does anyone know if a regular salsa jar could produce the same kind of results as does a mug?

      1. Hi Sarah, this recipe is pretty old on the blog but I put it on my list to retest this week to see if there is anything that needs adjustment. I will respond back again with the results, thanks so much for the feedback! ~melissa

        1. Great thanks! If you have any other jar mixes I’d be interested in hearing about them too:) … especially ones that create super moist bakery in a mug/microwave.

  5. Thought I would shsre the poem I wrote to use when I give jars for presents at Christmas:

    When the holidays are over
and all the sweets are gone
    How will you get through?
Oh how will you go on?

    You don’t need to worry
    Help is not too far
    Just remember that you have
    Brownies in a jar

    Pick a pretty mug
It’s so simple and so easy
    Chocolate oohey goey goodness
When you need it in a hurry

One third a cup of mix
    Two tablespoons of water
    Add two tablespoons of oil
    And mix into a batter

    Microwave just one minute
    Then let it cool slightly
    Your brownie is now ready
    You might want one nightly!

  6. Yum! This will definitely cure my brownie craving. Sometimes, making a full pan is annoying when you only want a few bites. Thanks for sharing the mug mix recipe, too!

  7. “Brownies” taste awesome but they are very much a cakey brownie. Mine looked and tasted like a brownie flavored cake, but drier. Still good, but not what I was expecting.
