A few weeks ago I shared a photo of my boys’ playroom in a total state of disarray and got some pretty harsh feedback from people about the mess. (For the record, my boys do TOTALLY clean up their play area and bedroom each night!) I am the first to admit that we are absolutely drowning in LEGOs but as I have three sons of LEGO building age and it’s about the only thing they play with I’ve come to terms with it! The bigger problem for me was that the playroom was stuffed to the brim with other toys that were getting no use. I have been so used to saving toys for my youngest that I had inadvertantly become a hoarder AND I was teaching my boys to be the same. I decided to take the Glad 31 in 31 Challenge and clear out the playroom!
Anyone who is around children often knows that they don’t take kindly to getting rid of toys-I would try to donate a small trinket and immediately it becomes the most important toy in the world and they can’t live without it! “I have so many memories of this!” my 7 year old told me recently about a small rubber ball he found at the park last year. My solution: about a month ago I took everything I wanted to get rid of and threw it in the closet. If they asked for it I gave it back, but after a few weeks if they haven’t missed it-it’s outta there!
The closet was a mess while this process was happening-I kept putting off cleaning it out but I finally grabbed my Glad ForceFlex bags and got to work over the holiday.
I sorted items into three bags-one for trash and broken toys that weren’t worth donating. Another bag to donate to some family friends that will be bringing home an adopted baby boy soon (yay!), and the last bag to donate to the thrift store on our military installation-the sales there fund scholarships for military kids so I love donating there!
I’m also doing the challenge with my own closet-each day this month I’m adding one item I don’t need to the bag to donate at the end of the month-I hate getting rid of my clothes/shoes so this “one a day” approach really makes it much easier!
