Ok y’all, we’re a week into 2016-how are you all doing on any goals you may have set? Many of us are trying to slim down in the New Year-I was startled to realize recently that I had gained weight last year, despite training for and running the Army Ten Miler. Too many bad food choices and a lack of moderation outweighed (pun intended!) my increase in running so now I’m back on track making healthy decisions. I wanted to share with you one of my favorite slim down secrets that I’ve learned over the years-not only from my own experience but from others I’ve met who live truly healthy, fit lives-the 3 essentials when you leave the house that help you make those good choices and avoid impulsive self sabotage!
Here are the 3 THINGS I NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT-these 3 things do wonders for helping me make good food decisions!
As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized I have a harder and harder time drinking enough water each day. I think it stems from having kids and being busy all day that I forget to stop and drink-then I sit down in the evening and I’m parched and can’t catch up! The same thing happens when I’m in my car-as soon as I sit down I realize I’m thirsty! By making it a habit to carry water with me whenever I leave the house I not only help myself get those ounces in I also make sure I don’t mistakenly think I’m hungry while I’m out when I’m actually thirsty!
I’ve learned that when I’m out and about and get hungry it’s hard to find good choices in vending machines or convenience stores so I always carry a small snack with me in my purse. My current favorite (which I’ve mentioned before here) is goodnessknows snack squares-specificaly the cranberry, almond, dark chocolate! It’s divided into 4 snackable squares of dark chocolate and whole nuts, real fruits, toasted oats with no artificial colors, flavors or sweetener-and all 4 squares are only 150 calories! It satisfies any sweet cravings I get and the almonds in it give me a little dose of protein to stave off hunger.
FOOD TRACKING APP
Tracking my food is essential for me-I’m a foodie and love to eat so making myself accountable for my choices helps keep me on track. I use MyFitnessPal for my tracking but there are a wide variety of apps that would work. My favorite thing about these apps is the ability to easily look up the nutritional value of foods I might be considering eating when away from home-so I can figure out which is the best choice of my options. Having that information at hand is a HUGE help and helps me avoid regret down the line!
What are your favorite tips for making good choices when you’re away from home? Any other essentials I should add? How are your New Year’s Goals working this year?
