I have a little sneak peek for you all today! Over the weekend I had a hair appointment and when I came home my husband had totally rearranged the house, to include moving our entire homeschool classroom from the multipurpose room on the first floor to the main living area! The main floor of the house has two living room/sitting areas that we just weren’t using so he figured why not move our homeschool classroom upstairs and use the extra space downstairs as storage.
I was surprised to say the least when I walked in the house and everything was rearranged but also super excited because I think this space is going to work so much better for our family! I’m not quite ready to show you the entire space (sneak peek on Instagram!) but I did want to share these cute DIY striped and gilded wooden letters I made to decorate the space recently.
As a member of the #12MonthsOfMartha crew I get to try fun new Martha Stewart Crafts materials and this month I really wanted to focus on paint. I found these wooden letters at my craft store ages ago for the homeschool room and had them sitting in my “to do” pile forever. When my latest goodie box of craft supplies arrived I found this thin patterning tape and knew there were some nautical stripes in my future!
After giving each letter a base coat of Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint in Wedding Cake, I taped my stripes off, being sure to press the tape down firmly on the edges. I also changed the directions of the stripes on each letter to add a little interest.
Next I gave a second coat of the Wedding Cake paint to the letters-this helps seal those taped edges and makes your lines look super neat when you peel the tape off! After that second coat dried I painted the stripes on in Deep Sea paint and allowed that to dry as well.
After removing my tape I gave the edges of the letters a nice coat of Martha Stewart Crafts Metallic Acrylic Paint in Gold for a little extra punch. (I love adding gold anywhere I can!)
The letters are a perfect addition to our classroom-although they may end up in my boys’ bedroom down the line as well, I think they’ll fit in most anywhere in our house with these classic colors!
Have you painted wooden letters for decorating before? What words would you spell out?
I received crafting supplies for this post as part of my #12MonthsOfMartha partnership. As always all ideas and opinions are my own.
