It’s here. Spring Cleaning time. I post each year with my tips and tricks for spring cleaning your home but today I thought I’d switch it up for you…today we’re talking about when NOT to clean. Here are 3 times in life you should just say no to cleaning, trust me, you’ll be better off for it!
When You’re Having a Major Life Event
Before starting my family I was a pretty clean and tidy person, I’ve always had my own cleaning schedules and even worked as a hotel maid and home cleaner for some time in high school and college. That being said, my first baby threw me for a loop. I remember my husband coming home one day when the baby was about 2 months old and asking me, in that nonchalant way husbands sometimes do, “do you have a plan for cleaning the house or what?” It was not his shining moment of sensitivity to my new mom frazzled brain but it goes to show that even the most dedicated homemaker can get overwhelmed by big life changes!
New babies, divorce, a big project at work, deployments, deaths in the family-all of these major life events throw schedules and habits to the wind…give yourself a break and let others help you if offered or allow yourself to hire a professional to take it off your plate!
When You Need to Prioritize
When I started this blog it was a hobby-I had two little boys with a third on the way, and it was a fun outlet. Fast forward four years and it’s a full time job for me, on top of caring for my three boys and last year I decided to go ahead and throw homeschooling my children on top of everything else. I love homeschooling and I love my blogging career but let’s be honest-I’m no superwoman-things were getting neglected around the house. While I’m pretty efficient at keeping my home generally tidy and doing my routine daily cleaning, I was starting to notice that some of the more detailed cleaning tasks were falling through the cracks and I was making myself crazy trying to keep up. I realized I needed to prioritize my time and that I wasn’t going to be able to do it all. Obviously homeschooling my boys needs to be my first priority, and that is followed my my work here on the blog; we depend on this income as a family, especially since we moved to the not-so-nice-on-the-budget Washington DC area!
Recently I was invited to try Homejoy, a new website that takes the guesswork out of having your home cleaned and I decided to take the plunge and try it out. With a few clicks I was able to schedule a professional home cleaning by a pre-screened, highly rated professional cleaner. I was able to specify how long I wanted them to clean, what areas were my priority, and make special requests…the platform was insanely easy to use and I loved that it was all online and the pricing was upfront.
As the day for my appointment approached I started to get a little nervous-I had never had my home professionally cleaned and I’m not a huge fan of having my “stuff” touched. I found myself wanting to pre-clean the house before they got here but resisted!! I was a bundle of nerves about the entire process.
When my cleaning professional Yasmin showed up (right on time!) I was instantly put at ease, she carried a rolling cart of supplies and we did a brief walk through of the house and talked about the areas I wanted to be the priority (bathrooms and kitchen-I hate cleaning those!) I ushered my boys downstairs to our multipurpose room to work on their schoolwork while she worked her magic upstairs.
A few hours later she was finished and I was so happy when I walked upstairs and saw the house! All those areas that I had been feeling guilty for not deep cleaning were sparkling and I was able to spend my day doing what I should-cuddling with my boys reading Mr. Poppers penguins, and working on creating awesome blog posts to share with you all! Priorities!!
When You’re Overwhelmed
I had a reader email me once desperate to get her home in tip top shape but at a loss for where to start. For our family, the military helps us out by moving us about every 2 years so we get a clean, fresh home to start from with each move! For others who haven’t had a home deep cleaned in ages it can definitely be overwhelming to try and get a grip on the mess and grime. I suggested to my reader to either hire someone to do a thorough deep cleaning so she could start with a blank slate and maintain the home from there or to tackle one room at a time until she could address the whole house.
The key is to move past being overwhelmed and into action! If you’re paralyzed with inaction because your home is at the point that you don’t know where to start then it’s worth it to get help rather than continue the cycle!
If you’re ready to just say “no” to spring cleaning, the kind folks over at Homejoy are offering my readers a $20 coupon to try their services, they now operate in 30 cities (hopefully one is near you!) Remember that you can book as much or as little help as you need! You can also have the option to request nontoxic cleaning products and you can request the same person every time you have your home cleaned-I’ll definitely be requesting Yasmin again next time I need help-she was awesome!! Just click here for your $20 off and be sure to stop back by after your cleaning and let me know if you felt the same sense of relief I did afterwards!! (**$20 off offer is good until April 8, 2015 and for new clients only.) You can find Homejoy on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram and I’ve joined with them to create an awesome new Spring themed Pin Board here, check it out!!)
So, have you had your home professionally cleaned? After finally taking the plunge I have to say I’m very sorry for putting it off so long, I thought I’d feel guilty for not doing it myself but all said and done I didn’t feel anything but grateful and relieved!!
