Stick with me for a moment so I can tell you a little background story on my acorns….
A couple of weeks ago my husband took me on a surprise day trip to Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania. I’m a huge history buff and he knew it would be right up my alley. The Gettysburg National Military Park was so much larger than I thought it would be-I guess I couldn’t really comprehend the vastness of it until I saw the battlefield in person.
It was a gloomy day, which seemed fitting as well. I was surprised to see homes and farms still in existence on the battlefield-you easily forget that wars are often fought in people’s backyards. I was overwhelmed with the monuments to all of the fallen soldiers-it looks as though every unit had their own marker, every state a monument to their sons lost in the battle.
The magnitude of it all was pretty overwhelming.
I know, so what does this have to do with glittered acorns?
Well, as I walked to our truck on our way to leave the Battlefield after stopping by the National Cemetery, I saw some acorns on the ground. On a whim I gathered a few up and put them in my pocket. I don’t know why I did it…it’s not like we don’t have acorns in DC…and those acorns sat on my desk until this week. My sons kept asking me what I was going to do with them so I finally thought a simple craft would be best-I decided to glitter them to use in my autumn decor, as a little reminder to me of the trip.
I gathered some Martha Stewart glittering glue (I like it because of the consistency of it for glitter and the built in brush) and some glass glitter similar to this one. I hot glued the tops of the acorns to the body if they were loose or had come off the carefully painted the acorn with glue and dunked in the glitter. After tapping off the excess it was done-less than five minutes and they accent my other autumn decor perfectly.
I like that they are a subtle reminder to me of that trip and the feelings it brought to me. They are also a reminder to keep my eye on the big picture…a little nudge to not sweat the small stuff every time they catch my eye (which is often, I’m distracted by shiny things!)
Have you ever visited Gettysburg? Did you find it as overwhelming as I did? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
