Consider yourself blessed if you are experiencing spring outside where you live. Here in MI, our temperatures are still way below normal for this time of year and in many places, we still can’t see the grass under our snow covered lawns. I long for the day when the forecast is spring-like and winter can finally be over.
I was inspired from a post on the Real Simple website I found on Pinterest, to create a Wheatgrass & Gerbera Daisy Centerpiece for our dining room table. I knew it was exactly the look I wanted for our home this spring.
One of my favorite places on earth is just a few minutes from our house. The best way to describe Horrocks, is that it’s like an indoor farmer’s market. They sell fresh fruit & veggies, cheese, meat, wine, coffee and my favorite department, flowers! In the summer they have several huge greenhouses outside filled with every tree, shrub, annual and perineal plant that you can imagine. However, all throughout the year, you can find a large selection of potted plants and fresh cut flowers indoors. I can’t shop at Horrocks without having a smile on my face and feeling overwhelmed with happiness. So of course, I was thrilled to have an excuse to do a little flower shopping there (not that I need one to stop in every once in awhile though!)
To make a similar centerpiece, you’ll need wheatgrass (sold in the produce department of most grocery stores-you can even buy seeds and grow it yourself), several stems of Gerbera Daisies, enough water picks for each flower, scissors and a planter (I used an old wooden box I picked up last summer at a flea market, but even a simple platter or several small plates would work.)
I recommend placing some newspaper on your work area, to make clean up easier.
Begin by cutting your grass. Make sure that you leave it long enough that once you place your flower picks, they will still be hidden by the grass.
“Mowing” grass indoors is messy!!!
Continue to cut all of your wheatgrass to the same length.
After you have them all trimmed up the way like, go ahead and clean up your workspace.
Place your wheatgrass into your planter (or onto whatever you are going to use to display them). Now is the fun part… adding the flowers.
Fill your flower pick with water and cut the Gerbera Daisy stem (at an angle for best water absorption) so that it will fit into the pick.
Place the Gerbera Daisy into the pick.
Place the pick into the wheatgrass.
Continue the same process until you have all of your flowers arranged.
Now that your centerpiece is complete, take your inspiration from it and continue to make your table beautiful. Whether you are going for a casual everyday look or something a little more fancy, this centerpiece will work for both. Make sure to invite some friends and family over too, I guarantee they’ll be wowed by your Wheatgrass & Gerbera Daisy Centerpiece.
This Wheatgrass & Gerbera Daisy project makes the perfect centerpiece for your table for this spring. Here’s a tip: If you continue to water and trim the grass as needed, you can swap out the flowers and have a beautiful living centerpiece for weeks to come. My hope is that you are filled with happiness this spring!
