Every now and then I have a good idea.  It’s true.  I promise. So a few months ago I was brainstorming while on a long drive and I thought to myself, “Melissa-you should make a smoothie that tastes like cake batter…everybody loves cake batter!”

After convincing myself it wasn’t weird to talk to myself like that, I thought to go one further-come up with a cake batter smoothie that was not only tasty but actually not bad for you too.  After a few trials, I’ve come up with a tasty, healthy smoothie that never fails to satisfy my sweet tooth with its cake batter goodness but also doesn’t make me feel guilty afterward!

Step by step

It’s too easy to make this 5 minute healthy smoothie, simply combine milk, yogurt, a banana, and a bit of dry cake mix and blend together for a delicious treat!

How to safely eat dry cake mix

It was brought to my attention in the years since this post first published in 2014 that eating dry cake mix is not recommended by the FDA after a flour recall for bacterial contamination years ago.

One option is to heat treat the cake mix before making the smoothie.

The simplest way to do this is by putting flour into a bowl and microwaving it on high until it’s 165 degrees. The second option is to heat the flour in the oven. For this technique, you should preheat the oven to 300 degrees, spread the flour over a baking tray and bake it for two-minute intervals until the temperature hits 165 degrees.

If you are concerned or uncomfortable with adding the cake mix to your smoothie I recommend substituting 1/4 – /1/2 teaspoon of this Cake Batter Extract instead.

To make this cake batter smoothie extra fun I love to either top it or rim the cup in sprinkles! Simply moisten the rim of your smoothie glass and press into sprinkles on a plate.

A little extra tip-my little boys are constantly eating only half of a banana at a time so instead of wasting the rest a while back I started slicing their uneaten portions and throwing them in the freezer for smoothies-perfect for this recipe!

  1. very good, my kids liked it a lot! (I used the flavoring for it like you suggested instead of the cake mix just ot be safe)

    1. just had it calculated and it looks like 365 depending on the size of the banana Tasanee. I’ve updated the recipe to show the nutritional info. Hope that helps! ~Melissa

      1. I have updated the recipe with an alternative to adding in the cake mix Maria. This was originally published years ago before those recommendations were in place.

        1. Another option is to heat treat your cake mix before using. You can pop the dry mix in the oven, air fryer, or microwave to kill any dangerous bacteria. Just search “heat treat cake mix/flour” for simple instructions. Hope this helps someone.

  2. I made this smoothie tonight. It was alright. It probably would have been better if I used vanilla Greek yogurt instead of plain yogurt. Next time I make it, I will use vanilla yogurt to see if it makes a difference.

  3. Hmmm…this is an interesting smoothie flavor. I’m sure the kids will love it since I don’ t like them eating raw cake batter…will be a nice substitute.
