The more I DIY things in my home, the more I realize there are things I can DIY in my everyday life as well.  That’s why I started making my own natural cleaners and things like my DIY Body Butter and Peppermint Lip Scrub

So a while back when I ran out of my favorite $30 a bottle conditioner I decided it was time to stop paying an arm and a leg for hair conditioner and figure out a new, natural way to deep condition my dry, frizzy hair.  (I’m never giving up my flat iron, sorry!)

I tried a few recipes I found online and wasn’t super happy with the results.  One left chunks of banana in my hair that were a super huge pain to get out, another left me shiny but in an I-just-bathed-in-olive-oil kindof greasy way.  Fun times.

Finally I found the perfect combination for me and of course had to share it with you.  The best part as always-super simple and inexpensive.

DIY Hair Mask Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • ripe avocado
  • egg

DIY Hair Mask Coconut Oil

If you don’t have coconut oil already at home, seriously you should probably run to the store right now and grab some.  I’ll wait right here for you to get back.

Seriously.

Coconut oil is my new favorite thing…I’ve always kept it on hand for things like cooking granola but last year I realized it was my new best friend and I use for everything from moisturizing my skin (it is surprisingly NOT greasy once absorbed) to making lip balm to dissolving my essential oils.

Okay, now that you realize coconut oil (make sure it’s pure, unrefined, and organic!) is a necessary part of life, the hair mask.

How to Make a DIY Hair Mask

Simply blend the ingredients either in a blender (affiliate link) or with a potato masher until uniform.  Rub a little in your hands at a time (the coconut oil melts as soon as it warms up so this will thin the mask out) and work through your hair, especially at the ends.

Let it sit in your hair about 15 minutes and then wash and rinse as usual.  Your hair will dry shiny and soft! I’ve been doing this about every two weeks and it’s fantastic for me as I only trim my hair twice a year and my ends can get pretty dull!

DIY Hair Mask for Dry Scalp

If you have a dry scalp or {gasp} dandruff as well (I totally get this from time to time-hate it!) I like to do an extra step prior to putting the hair mask on.

Take about a teaspoon of coconut oil and add 3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 6 Drops of Melaleuca Oil (also known as Tea Tree Oil) and rub that into the scalp before applying the hair mask.

It usually improves significantly in one treatment.

Do you have a favorite homemade hair treatment? If so I’d love to hear it!

  1. My doctor recommended that I wash my hair every couple days with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water then use 1/4 teaspoon shea butter because I have such a dry scalp. This was only last Monday. I can’t get used to it. It doesn’t feel clean The shea butter makes me feel greasy. Today, I tried your mixture of coconut oil, lavender essential oil and tea tree oil and I didn’t feel.greasy . How often can I use that and do you think I can use it in place of the shea butter? What do you suggest for shampoo?
    Thank you.

    1. You can definitely use this recipe she posted in place of the recipe option ur doctor gave you. The recipe in this blog is also a super great healthy option.

  2. This sounds lovely. We recently tried a mix of honey, coconut milk, and egg, which worked beautifully and left a wonderful perfume.
