Stenciled Tea Towel Hostess Gift

stenciled tea towel

I’m slowly becoming addicted to my Silhouette and it inspired me to whip up this fast and easy hostess gift recently.  It’s crazy easy and I’m excited to share it with you today!

Supplies:

Silhouette machine
vinyl
transfer paper
tea towels
foam brush or stencil brush
paint
fabric medium

My fabric medium recommended prewashing my material so I washed my towels prior to starting the project.

I whipped up a quick “Bon Appetit” design using fonts I already had on my computer and cut it into some spare vinyl I had on hand. After it was cut I removed the letters being careful to leave the “holes” in the letters on the vinyl backing. (I linked the design for you but this is my first time sharing a cut file-if there are any issues please let me know, still learning!)

I cut a piece of transfer paper the same size as my vinyl and peeled the backing off.  I placed it over the front of my vinyl and pressed it down firmly with the side of a bone folder (a credit card works well for this too!)

After it’s totally adhered I carefully peeled the backing off of the vinyl.  This part is one where patience pays off, go slow to make sure the vinyl sticks to the transfer paper.  If a piece starts pulling off go back and adhere it down again.

Once the vinyl backing is removed position it over your towel and again adhere it with the bone folder or credit card.

Now for the fun part! Mix your paint and fabric medium together in a 2:1 ratio or according to package directions.  Using a foam brush or stencil brush load a very small amount of paint on the brush and carefully tap onto the stencil. It’s important to not use too much paint.

After your stencil is painted leave everything to dry thoroughly.  (I tried to remove my stencil when wet the first time and it was NOT a good idea-the entire thing was ruined, the design is too intricate for that.)

That’s it!

I layered my towel on a cookbook and added a wooden spoon and bow and it’s the cutest little hostess gift don’t you think? And easy too!

Have you stenciled fabric yet? Any other tips for newbies like me??
