I decided that each Friday this month will Be “Football Friday” here at The Happier Homemaker, so I’ll be sharing football themed projects and recipes for the next couple of weeks!
For some reason I’m even more excited than normal for college football this year-it could have something to do with my alma mater (Clemson) being ranked #4 right now! My husband is a University of Michigan alum and he’s been die-hard from the womb I think!
Wanna hear a funny joke?
How do you know someone went to the University of Michigan?
wait for it….
Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.
If you know a Wolverine you’ll get that joke! 🙂
Anyways, I had this vision for a college football mantel and this was probably the most enthusiatic my hubby has ever been about my mantel decor. He was checking in with me on the progress each day because this was a bit more work than my normal projects!
The astroturf was the beginning of the football mantel plan. I got a 4′ long by 6″ wide strip of astroturf cut for me at Lowes for less than $5. Up on the mantel it went along with some white acrylic paint yard lines and chipboard numbers.
Dowels were my friends on this project-I used them to make both the Clemson flags and the goal posts at either end of the mantel (held together with hot glue and painted with DecoArt MultiSurface Satins).
Wondering how the dowels are all standing up? I have pieces of mdf under the astroturf with tacks hotglued pointed side up on top. The tack ends are sticking up through the astroturf and the dowels are stuck into the tacks. I was pretty proud of that idea!
Under the mantel I cut out some little football shapes and painted the lines on them. They are hotglued to some white twine (it doesn’t show against my white mantel) and adds a little interest to the lower part of the mantel.
The mirror above the mantel needed something to tie it into the football theme so I made a chipboard University of Michigan “Go Blue” banner. I bought chipboard banner pieces and letters at Hobby Lobby and painted them with the DecorArt paint I mentioned earlier. (It’s seriously my new favorite-it covers so well, and no, this is not a sponsored post, just sharing!) Over the painted letters I used Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to add some gloss and finish to the sign. I strung it up on some baker’s twine and hot glued it in place.
Yes, I know I may need to see someone for my hot glue addiction. I love using hot glue on my mantel decor because it just peels off gloss paint no damage when I change out the decor!
Lastly, the Clemson banners across the mantel…at games they have people that run across the field carrying flags just like this when our team scores so I thought this was perfectly reminiscent of that for me. Shall we all close our eyes and reflect on our youth now? No?
I hope y’all like my mantel…I seriously have never felt this much pride I think in my mantel decor before…I think I’ll be hard pressed to get my Autumn mantel off because I won’t want this one to come down! (Is it too much to switch it back to this each week on Saturday?)
So, Happy Football Friday y’all, do you watch college football? Who’s your team?
