I’m unplugging a bit this week and next to enjoy my husband’s time off from work but I have an amazing blogger to introduce you to today-Wanda from Recreate & Decorate!
I’m so excited to be guest posting for The Happier Homemaker today. I have been a fan of her blog for some time now.
I’m Wanda, an Army wife, home decorating enthusiast who loves sharing ideas for decorating a home like a pro but on a budget. My decorating style is transitional, a mix of traditional and modern home decorating ideas, blended to create a chic, current and oh so classy home!
Since my husband will be retiring soon, we bought our home with hopes to stay put for a long time. Therefore when I decorated this home, I wanted to have that WOW factor when you walk into the front door.
I used a neutral color scheme that consists of several shades of white and gray with pops of color and rich, dark furniture.
My living room is an example of how I used yellow to add pizazz to this room.
This room is also about mixing the old with the new. My grandmother had given me this antique desk which I mixed with some contemporary accessories to create a perfect blend of the old and the new. Mixing the old with the new is a great way to balance 2 opposite decorating styles, without leaving your room looking way out of style or too ultra modern. I like to think it says “this girl loves the past but keeps her eye on the future!”
I absolutely love this yellow color. It reminds me of a bright, summer day.
and it makes me smile each time I walk into the room.
These colors used together create a refreshing and current look. While adding a pop of color with some home accessories allows me to play up my personality, I had to limit the amount of yellow I added.
*When using a bright color to give your room that interest, just make sure you don’t over do it. Too much of a good thing can be really bad. You want just enough of the color to spark your interest when you walk into the room without screaming “woo-hoo, look at me!”
When in doubt, Less is always More!
My Master bedroom is another room that I have that shows off a transitional style. This room has to be my favorite room of all. The walls are painted a soft blue gray.
I choose a darker blue gray as the accent color.
What makes this room so chic is the crisp white bedding, traditional dark furniture, mixed with contemporary accessories, including the large monogram over the bed.
The texture and color of these pillows make a statement when used with white bedding and really stand out.
The use of dark furniture really plays up to the gray and white colors in my master bedroom. Instead of using the matching mirror to the dresser, I used a silver contemporay mirror.
Combining white, silver, and glass creates that elegant look that I love so much.
Just create small groupings using these 3 elements together.
Using furniture, home accessories, and design principles to achieve an elegant, chic, transitional look is really very simple. Whether you’re decorating your bedroom, living room, or kitchen, remember using pattern and texture, like fabrics, wood grains, accessories, of different decorating styles will make your room stand out. Try using a soft neutral color palette with pops of color to show off your personality and bring a blah room to life. Don’t forget to mix the old with the new and bring in the elements needed to create that chic, current, and classy look.
I hope you enjoyed a sneek peak into my home. You are always welcome to visit me at Recreate and Decorate.com and see my home’s transformation. What started out being an outdated, so so home, has turned out to be a very stylish home. My husband and I have tackled all of the updates ourselves and I would love for you to come and look around!
Thank you Melissa for having me and allowing me to introduce my decorating style to your friends!
