Gilded Bookcase Makeover-Wayfair and Hometalk DIY Challenge

When I was contacted recently by Wayfair and Hometalk asking if I was interested in participating in a DIY challenge I was so excited. You see, I have a bit of a stubborn personality and I love a good challenge to get creative!  The rules were simple, Wayfair gave bloggers three different items to choose from: a bookcase, lampshade, or mirror and we were to do a DIY makeover following one of three themes: geometric, black and white, or incorporating rope. I chose the bookcase and geometric options.

Here is the bookcase I was sent, the Furinno Pine 3 Tier Bookshelf.

It was cute and functional but I was looking to put this in my office/craft room so it needed a super glam makeover. After all, as the only girl in this house full of boys the office is my outlet for all things feminine!

I have been super into gold lately so after I assembled the bookcase I started coating it in Rub N’ Buff.  I had never used it before and it was very easy.  That being said, it took a L-O-N-G time and in the end I’m not sure if it was worth it (more on that in a few.)  Also excuse the lack of in-the-process pics, if you follow along on Facebook or Twitter you’ll know that my one year old poured a glass of water on my laptop thus sentencing it to death along with all my photos for my recent DIYs.  And yes, this is the same one year old that caused $5000 in water damage to the house last year.  Fun times.

Anyways, back to the bookcase.  After I gilded that baby I was ready to add some geometric pizazz!  I cut 1″ strips of paper and used them to make a sort of star template.  Then I positioned the stars on regular ol’ posterboard to create this awesome geometric pattern.  I was inspired by this tutorial on a posterboard wall hanging.

I cut the design out with a craft knife and then came the fun part.  I tried to Rub N’ Buff the posterboard and it was NOT working well.  So I ended up spraying it with my Krylon Shortcuts spray paint in Gold Leaf.  (I used the same spray on my little birds decor.)

The spray paint worked like a charm and upon further inspetion I think it looked every bit as good as the Rub N’ Buff so if you do this project you could save yourself a lot of time by just using the spray paint on the entire project.

I think it turned out fantastic and I absolutely love, love, love it in my office! What do you think?

Whaaa? Posterboard? Really? I totally thought you went and cut out that whole intricate pattern out of wood. Genius move, lady! I love me some gold, too!

I love the geometric back! It adds just the right touch. Also loving the gold! Great addition to your office.

It is very pretty. I have never heard of the Rub ‘N Buff stuff before, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun on a smaller scale. :)

This is fantastic. I can’t believe that back is poster board. Great job. I’ve often wondered what I would do if I was faced with a challenge like this. Would I choke and send it all back?

Great idea!! I want to give my bookcase a makeover. It is a traditional kind with only 3 shelves. Should I apply any kind of protective coating to avoid wear and tear to the poster boards. Any ideas what I should use? I would like to keep it for a long time.

I didn’t put any coating on mine and while the bookcase doesn’t get a ton of wear it’s holding up fine. If there was any fading you could easily touch it up with rub n’ buff I would think!
