It all started with an old clock we had that I had set in my junk pile workspace in the garage to upcycle in some way. Over the holidays I received the new Ballard Designs catalog in the mail and as soon as I saw this startburst mirror I knew what I wanted to do!
This gorgeous bone mirror is $269 but before I realized it was bone the first thing that came to my mind was popsicle sticks! (What? You didn’t think that too?)
I started off with an old clock which I of course can’t find my before picture of! (Bad blogger!) I took the clock face out and sprayed the glass with Krylon Looking Glass spray paint. Meanwhile I used my fancy-dancy new cordless glue gun to create a big ol’ stack of little popsicle fans. Fun times.
Once my fans were all dry I put my glass mirror back in the frame and started layering the popsicle stick fans onto the mirror. The first layer I glued on about halfway through the “fan” leaving spaces in between. Once it was dry I added the second layer behind it slightly higher.
Once my mirror was assembled I covered the mirror portion with newspaper and sprayed the entire thing with Krylon ShortCuts in Gold Leaf.
Easy-peasy! The entire thing probably took an hour all together (although for me it was two days because I ran SIX popsicle sticks short the first day and had to wait until I could get to the store to finish!)

Thanks Courtenay! Luckily I didn’t have to eat all those popsicles just to get the sticks! Although I did run short by six at first and I debated having the boys eat enough to let me finish but alas, it felt like a bad Mommy move!
Popsicle sticks are PERFECT, way to think outside the box!

I’m kicking myself because around a year ago, in one of my “Garage clean-ups” I put a circular mirror with a white plastic frame in the bin! I could have used it to do this brilliant version of the starburst mirror
Oh well, I’m sure I’ll find a new one at some point.
Thanks for stopping by at my blog and leaving your comment by the way!

These do not look like popsticks. I think because you had the great idea to sort of “fan” them as you were gluing. Thanks for this great idea. I do have 3 medium sunbursts mirrors over my bed but I have a blank space between two windows that I was thinking of putting some smaller sunburst mirrors. I think your design would be great for one of them. I saw your post over at StoneGable blog party.

Absolutely love it and was thinking that you could also highlight the Popsicle sticks with some Rub n Buff to give it an antique look.
Kathy can you believe I haven’t tried rub n buff yet? I’ve heard it’s awesome though!

Wow, girl! I totally adore you mirror! it’s too cool!
Thanks so much Gwen! I hope you’re doing well-been missing talking with you!
I love that mirror. I have a rectangle one, not too big but not small either. I have been watching out at the Salvation for a frame but no such luck yet. I would love to come up with something with the popcycle sticks as I love that look! I know rectangles are a far cry from a sun burst but there has to be SOMETHING!. I will keep an eye out and my creative flow working and when I come up with something, I will mail you a pic of it! Thanks for posting that idea! WONDERFUL!
