My husband’s unit has a coffee group for spouses and last night was my turn to host. Of course I had to do a craft night as the theme and I was inspired to try to make a patriotic yarn wreath like this one from Attempted Creativity:
Seems simple enough right? Sure.
The problems began when I started looking to buy the wreath forms. Twelve wreath forms start to add up $$ but I was armed with coupons. What I didn’t plan on was that the craft stores would not have enough in stock. I went to three different craft stores and they didn’t have twelve wreaths combined! Who’d have thunk? And of course I didn’t plan very far ahead so there was no time to order the forms. I scoured the internet and decided to try a thrifty alternative: Pool Noodles. Three dollar stores later I finally found one with them in stock and came home with an armful of pool noodles (I’m sure I looked like a crazy person walking through the parking lot with an armful of noodles!
So out came the duct tape and pool noodles were magically transformed into wreath forms.
Or so I thought.
Cut to Tuesday afternoon when I’m desperately trying to clean the house and keep the three boys and dog from creating messes and I notice a few of the pool noodles are suspiciously teardrop shaped. Not good. More duct tape was added and I thought we were good to go.
The ladies all arrived and we got to work wrapping wreaths! It seemed to go by very quickly and we learned a few things along the way:
-Hot glue melts pool noodles, so don’t use it to attach your yarn. Duh Melissa! Sorry ladies!
-While Walmart may label their ribbon rolls as having 9 yards, sometimes they apparently like to mix things up and only put one yard on a roll. Check before you begin your project if you’re going to need a large amount.
-Bow-tying is a significantly under-rated skill. Especially for those of us without little girls!
-If your craft night starts to go awry just offer everyone a glass of wine and hope they don’t notice that they are quickly becoming part of a DIY fail!

Overall we had a great time and the ladies were very good sports about the pool noodles. Several went home with tear-drop shaped wreaths unfortunately though. I wouldn’t go the pool noodle route again…perhaps I wasn’t taping it well enough but we tried really hard to secure them and it wasn’t holding properly.
It was so fun to have an evening of crafty fun and conversation (and with no kids to corral-all three boys were camped in the family room with Daddy!) I think next time it would be a good idea for me to try the craft out ahead of time though!
