So when I was browsing my new Pottery Barn catalog and saw this hurricane I knew just how to try to reproduce it!
I admit that my husband thought I was crazy but hey-a girl’s gotta try these things out you know?
I bought a pack of cheap spoons and cut the handles off with kitchen shears. I started layering them with hot glue then primes and sprayed with Krylon silver metallic paint. If you try this-be very, very careful with the hot glue-every little string or glob will be magnified once the paint is on. I think it would have looked better if I could have found the Looking Glass spray paint I’ve seen elsewhere but none of my local stores had it in stock. I also would have made a wire handle and wrapped it around the top before adding the last layer of spoons.
I was about to chalk it up as another DIY Fail when I decided to give it one last shot-with some oil rubbed bronze spray paint I had out for another project. I have to say, I’m thinking this little guy might make the cut after all!

I totally want to hop on the plastic spoon bandwagon…. I just don’t have any ideas yet! How funny that we both did PB inspired projects this week. Love that! I’ve looked at those lanterns in the catalogue so many times and I would never have thought of your idea. I wonder if you added a bit of trim around the top, like maybe some braided jute twine, if it would give you more of the contrast of textures like the PB one has. I always think everything needs a little twine though.
Yeah, now that I think about it, I may have to copy you on this one… with full credit to you of course!

Love love love it! First I’ve seen of the plastic spoon creations and I think it is darling. Would like to see a pic from the top….agree that maybe adding some braid/twine may be needed and like the idea of the handle too.
Looking at that lamp, I have a couple ideas. Dollar Tree glassware, clear spoons… I may have to give it a shot! I wield a mean glue gun LOL! Definitly not a craft fail!

Hi Melissa! I have a question – you mentioned using hot glue to stick the spoons to the jar. If you used a candle inside the jar, did any of the hot glue melt off? Other than that worry, I have to say it was a really fun idea! Keep ‘em coming! Definitely NOT a “fail.”
