Master Bedroom Plan

I have so many half-finished projects around the house its not funny right now! There are blog posts to be written and “afters” to be photographed but it has been a very hectic week so I thought it would be fun to share a “before” picture of our master bedroom as well as my plans to revamp it.

As with most of the house, the master bedroom is a work in progress.  Now that we are finally in our own home after years of rentals and moving constantly I am ready to give this space a true “style.”  We started a while back by building our own headboard using Ana White plans.  We refinished an antique Drexel table for my husband’s nightstand and I bought a white nightstand on my big IKEA trip a few months ago.

The bedding set is from Target and I love it but I feel like the room is pretty bland with the beige, white and grey.  Something is missing.  I’m not sure if I want to pop some color in the room or keep it neutral somehow.  Also bothering me is the bedskirt…we have a Sleep Number bed so we don’t have a standard boxspring and frame and our current bedskirt fits horribly.  I’m on the lookout for a box-pleated white version to tidy up the look of the bed.

The floral chair on the left side is seriously the most comfy chair ever.  It is where i have nursed all three of our babies and it is never going away.  That being said, it is my hubby’s since before we met and I don’t care for the pattern of the fabric and it definitely doesn’t do anything for the space.  I don’t want to spend the money to upholster it so I am trying to work up the courage to slip cover it.  You know how I have been avoiding the sewing machine lately though (see hot glue gun exhibits A, B, and C!).  I’m also not sure if I want a bland neutral fabric for the slip cover or if I want to try something more bold.

Another big project are the empty walls-we need curtains and some wall art.  My husband wants paintings for the space over the headboard so we have been scouring etsy and the web for the perfect pieces with no luck so far.  I’m also at a loss on what I want for curtains. Again-do I want to stick with the neutral theme or accent with some color? Once I figure out that question the room should fall into place fairly quickly.

So, thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Would you pop this room with some color or stick with the neutral color palette?

Thanks for stopping by!

We are in the process of remodeling our bedroom. Creating a master suite with a walkin closet. I would say go with some more color! I have a chair like yours that the husband wants in the room…..it is bright orange. Yuck! LoL so I am trying to decide how I want to redo it.

    Have a great day!

  2. I’m really trying not to chuckle at your desire for more color in your bedroom, since I’ve been looking at your blog for ways to get some of the bold color out of mine! My walls are a deep red, the curtains and wood are chocolate brown (somehow it works together) and there are a lot of old gold accents. It’s all 1,001 Arabian Nights-ish, and I’m ready for something lighter, airier and more beige!

You know Katie, I was playing with that pic on Polyvore today popping in various colors to see how they would work and I just don’t think I can do it! I think I need to stick with the grey and white, perhaps bring in some slate blue with the art but no color I try with the room looks good! I was wondering if I needed to change out my lamps because they are gold tone and I’m not sure if they are working with the grey tones. I think this room confuses me so much because the grey is cool and the wood, walls and carpet are such warm neutrals. Ahhh, maybe I’ll go work on another room!

    • Ooh, if you want to change the lamps, check out what HomemakerInHeels.com did with the Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint. I just ordered some to change a pair of lamps in my living room. I should probably start in my bedroom, but I’d have to paint over that deep red and… well, that’s going to be a nightmare!

    Hi,

I think you are on the right track. You want a bedroom to be soothing but have style at the same time. I say paint your lamps black and see how they pop against your wall color and the grey and white of the bedding; or get taller lamps with a more substantial base and do the same thing. For curtains, I personally would be looking for a gorgeous floral or abstract print that has grey/white/brown/tan/gold and even some black and maybe a little blue in it to pull it all together — blue only if you decide to add some blue as an accent color in say a pillow or shams. Again, personal preference, but I find blue in a bedroom too cold for my liking. I want to wrap myself in warm homey colors that are not too jolting — so, no red walls :)
