In my quest to engage the boys more I’ve been re-reading a lot of my Montessori materials as well as some of my favorite preschool blogs.
This past weekend they were very rambunctious in the house and my husband and I usually send them outside to get their energy out but it was obvious to me that left to their own devices they would do nothing but terrorize each other. They needed some direction.
Enter Mommy. I gathered some supplies:
-two bowls (okay one was a dog bowl, we’re in the midst of packing the house!)
-one of their plastic bins from the playroom
-some rocks I had leftover from this activity
-two plastic cups
I put a handful of rocks and a couple of dinosaurs in each bowl and filled the plastic bin with water. I explained to the boys that this was ALL the water they could have, if they dumped it they were finished. I suggested they use the cups to move the water. Then I left them to it.
Sweet peace for an hour! They happily made “seas” for their dinosaurs to swim in, practiced pouring water back and forth between the containers…it was great and so easy. Literally taking five minutes to think of a way to engage them transformed that hour from me constantly nagging to a productive hour for me and an hour of fun cooperative play for the boys!
