With the impending move I have been spending a lot of time thinking about what works in our current home and what doesn’t-as well as how to fix this in the new house. One area that needs a lot of work is the nursery for my youngest, Tommy. He will be 8 months by time we are in the new house and is just about crawling now so I have been putting a lot of thought into his room design, especially from the point of view of him exploring.
With the older boys we had a traditional nursery but with Tommy I have him sleeping Montessori-style on a mattress on the floor. Yes, you heard right-no crib, no toddler bed, just a twin mattress on the floor. While he’s not full-blown crawling just yet-more low-crawling Army style (he gets that from his Daddy!) he already can maneuver off the bed safely by himself. Its amazing what little ones can do if we let them learn!
Anyways, now that he’ll be more mobile I want to engage him in his space and for that I need a trip to IKEA so I’ll be braving the two hour drive with my youngest next week to stock up on new things for the house. My biggest purchase will be four Expedit bookcases-one each for the boy’s rooms and one for the family room. (I will share the other room plans soon!) For Tommy’s room the bookcase will be on its side and I’ll also be picking up some super cute wooden toys and cloth fruit/veggie toys for him to play with. I am hoping to also find spice racks to put his books on, a leap canopy for over his bed, a tunnel to crawl through and hopefully an unbreakable mirror to hang down at his level as well.
I am so excited to see it all come together, I’ll be sure to post pictures along the way!
Have you gone without a crib or used anything else Montessori-inspired for your children?
I’m really excited to put his room together,
