I thought I’d share a great little tip I found here for getting the kids to take care of their personal responsibilities independently (or as independent as a 3 and 5 year old can!)
Each morning and evening the boys know to do their “handful of things.” This is simply five things they are always expected to do. For us the morning is:
1. Go potty
2. Get dressed
3. Comb hair
4. Brush teeth
5. Make their bed
In the evening they:
1. Put on jammies
2. Take their medicine-we all have allergies
3. Take their vitamin
4. Brush and floss teeth
5. Go potty
Having the “handful” helps them remember just what they are supposed to do and makes the hectic mornings and evenings run a lot smoother for everyone. They think of it almost as a game and we praise heavily when they excitedly announce that they have done their handful each morning and evening. Its a simple routine that makes a big difference!
Please let me now if you try it and how it goes over in your home, it took our boys about a week to get in the habit of it and its been smooth sailing since!
Thanks for stopping by!
