The first year I was with my husband we were living in Italy and he had to go to Germany for training over my birthday. I didn’t know many people and was far from family but decided to make the best of my birthday regardless of being alone.
I bought a train ticket to Venice (about 40 minutes by train from our home in Vicenza) and I spent the day mindlessly wandering the city, treating myself to a delicious lunch of Spaghetti Bolgnese on the Grand Canal, sketching in the Piazza San Marco, and enjoying a capuccino in a sidewalk cafe before heading back home that evening. It was one of my first lessons on making the most of the sometimes lonely life as a military spouse.
So today I turn a ripe old 32 and again my husband is away, this time in Iraq. However, I have three little men this year to celebrate with. So while I’ll definitely be missing my wonderful husband, I will enjoy a trip for ice cream with my little guys, a birthday song performed by two silly preschoolers, and hopefully a Skype call somewhere in the mix!
