Land of Nod Knock Off

We are about to transition my oldest son (who is 4) from his toddler bed to a twin bed. I’ve been holding off until my husband is home so he can be a part of the process of getting the “big boy bed,” as this is going to be a very BIG deal around here. A few weeks ago I got a cute twin bed set from Target with a rocket/outer space theme to it, my son’s current obsession. Today, while wasting time surfing the net, I saw this painting at Land of Nod for a cool $129.

Being a painter myself, and being that I happen to have no plans this morning and a large empty canvas sitting next to my easel, I decided to paint one myself.

I used a cheap canvas from AC Moore I had picked up on sale last week, some cheap-o acrylic paints from Walmart I had buried in a drawer, and of course paint brushes.  (I usually paint in oils but for this painting I needed something that would dry very fast rather than having to wait days for colors to dry like my “art” paintings.) I also used a little acrylic painters medium to thin the paints in parts of the background and to do the lettering.

I’m pretty pleased with the way it turned out overall.  Because I used such poor quality paints there are a few things that bother me-I had the hardest time with the yellow paint, it was not very opaque. But other than that I think it looks good, and my son is pretty excited to hang it in his room so I’d say it was an hour and a half well-spent!

I’m linking this project up here and as my Best DIY of July!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Nicely done! It turned out really cute.

  2. I had to look at this many times because your painting really looks so much like the original….very nice job!

Yeah, I use those Walmart paints all the time because of the cheap price and the fact that we live in a small town with no craft store as a buying option. I have for sure had my trouble with the yellow paint myself not being opaque. I also have noticed that I can’t mix more than two colors without it starting to muddy up the colors some…pretty frustrating paint I know!

But…the price of the paint is sooo good, it’s hard not to buy it (frustrations and all)!

Anyhow, your painting is going to look really nice in your son’s room!

YOU are an excellent painter–what a gift you have!
    I love seeing knock-offs!
I make quite a few of them myself, but not the canvas painted kind :)
HUGS and blessings and a safe arrival of your hubby, home!
