We recently moved into a new home in anticipation of our third son’s arrival later this summer. Our old house would have been a very tight squeeze for the three boys and we were lucky enough to find a great house in a much more family friendly neighborhood than our previous house.
One of the things I was most excited about was the screened in porch on the new house. I am one of those people who gets attacked by mosquitoes while others around me are spared, so I was grateful for a nice place to sit to watch the boys play outside but be protected from the bugs! Here are some pictures I took when walking through the house before the owners moved out-they were using the area as a playroom of sorts.
I definitely wanted this area as a “Mom zone” rather than a kid area though! (With a husband and little boys there aren’t many feminine areas of our house-I’m working on that though!) Here is my work in progress:
I was a bit limited on what I could do to the space as it is a rental but I started just by doing a thorough cleaning when we moved in. I bought the furniture at World Market. The blue pillows came from Pier One and the awesome Coral embroidered pillows were a great find at Steinmart. The lanterns hanging and clear hurricanes were also World Market finds and that cutey-patooty little turtle is a Pier One impulse buy (but he’s filled with Citronella, for me anything citronella is a good buy! Plus I thought the boys would like it!)
I had planned on adding an area rug to define the space and picking up some more lanterns to hang around the windows also but I haven’t found any lanterns I like to go with the ones I already have, or the right rug (at the right price) just yet. I have another chair too but the area serves as a walk through as well so it is relegated to another part of the porch except for when company is over. I had also debated curtains or blinds to spruce up the windows a bit, but again not sure the cost is worth it in a rental when I have no idea if we’ll be able to use them at our next house. Maybe I should try the drop cloth curtains that seem to be popping up everywhere lately?
I’d love to hear your thoughts/ideas. Any suggestions for finishing the space? Thanks for looking!
